WANNABE Journalists and bloggers pay attention. Tweeting can actually help hone your writing and editing skills. How? Well, with Twitter, you only have 140 characters to get your message across – it helped Barack Obama win the US presidency. It’s helping many UK MPs get their message across on policy and interaction with the people they represent. And now, if you’re a would-be journalist or blogger, then you should be using Twitter much more. On the NCTJ News Writing Exam, (which is the definitive guide to showing journalism employers you can write concisely and accurately, you are expected to write one story of between 70 – 80 words, and one that is between 40 – 50. Ask yourself this. How would you summarise that story in 140 characters on Twitter? Could you get the point across. Making that dull story into something worthwhile retweeting could be the key to having your own content retweeted.
So there it is, get tweeting. Practice makes perfect.
