The Shadow Lib Dem Treasury economic guru spokesman took a pop at George Osbourne‘s conference rhetoric from October in the Queen’s Speech debate which is going on in Parliament this afternoon.

Cable said that there is extreme poverty and extreme wealth in the country, which needs to be dealt with. He said that the government were right last October to part-nationalise the banks, but the post-handling has been a failure, especially regarding fiscal policy. He agrees with the governor of the Bank of England‘s assessment that the banks should be re-structured and split into two to distinguish from so called ‘casino’ Banks from normal High Street Banks. He hoped the Chancellor would acknowledge that fact.

He also proposed that the National Audit Office should regulate much more – at present, they only regulate on government’s use of public money, they should have a wider framework, and assess what the government will do. But he said there is a fundamental difference between ‘aspirational legislation’ and legislation of targets, such as in climate change bill.

That’s the line being taken by the Liberals and the Left, that the richest in society are all alright Jack….Remember, Cable is a fan of taxation for the rich…
