The bigger picture

LIFE is all about being what or who you want to be, and achieving what you want to achieve. It’s a simple philosophy that PLENTY has never lost sight of. As Yaro Starak writes time an time again on his blog, whether you’re an independent entrepreneur, or a multi-staffed corporation, business is a journey. Rather apt that Starak’s blog is indeed called Entrepreneur’s Journey.

Last week, PLENTY scooped an award for “Best Entrepreneur” at a gala dinner in London in aid of noSWeat Journalism Training’s tenth birthday celebrations, and also in conjunction with raising money for the Journalists’ Charity. A worthy cause, since we all know what the state of journalism is in. It was a proud moment in what could be the start of a great career ladder for PLENTY. And he has high hopes for himself in relation to where he could go.

Over at Adam Westbrook’s blog, he makes the good point that in order to achieve, you have to think ‘big.’ He uses the model of music mogul Simon Cowell, a multi-millionaire, who, along with two others created the now very successful X-Factor programme. What PLENTY believes is that it’s not just ideas that bring in success, it’s determination and motivation. You have to want it. Thinking ‘big’ is part of that motivation. Look where Rupert Murdoch and co have come.

And so this comes to the point about where journalism is heading. It needs to think ‘bigger’ and better, than ever before. The ‘old’ way of doing things is coming to an end. There’s a great quote from one of my favourite films (Long Good Friday) where a gangster says: “I respect the past, but always keep my eye on the future.”

It’s now time that old media moved with the times, and thought ‘big’ at the same time. If that means joining forces with smaller ventures to make one ‘big’ project, then so be it. But it needs to re-think its business model. To give credit to the Murdoch clan, they’ve tried to do that!

And just for a juicy quote from the 1980s film Scarface, Tony Montana says to his boss Frank: “The time has come Frank. We’ve got to move our distribution. We’ve got to think ‘Big’ now.”
