Resilience doesn’t re-build lives?

+++++++++++++++++++WHAT EXACTLY DO WE MEAN BY RESILIENCE IN THE FACE OF CRISIS?++++++++++++++++++++++++++

JUST been reading a post on the Left-wing Think Tank blog Demos, by Beatrice Karol Burks about resilience in the face of crisis. To summarise, she seems to believe that communities in the face of crisis need to deal with it themselves, rather than expect ‘big’ government and insurance agencies to come in and save the day.

So does this argument relate to the Cameroon policy of freeing the people from the chains of ‘big’ government? If we are to understand the argument for this resilient policy Burks is advocating, which was proposed by Demos, then government will just dish out the cash and leave people and local authorities to get on with it, (Gordon has promised to dish out £1 million to help out the people of Cockermouth, Cumbria, Wales, that cash will then be used by locals in the clear up job after.

Releasing people from the chains of ‘big’ government is all very well, but in this case, ‘big’ government knows best, and should be involved. After all, what use is our government, if it can’t be a ‘rock’ to fall back on in a crisis? Resilience doesn’t re-build bricks and mortar…
